Google Tops 100 Billion Searches in July 2009

To no one's amazement, Google continues it's virtual monopoly of internet searches. In the latest Comscore study of global search market growth, Google's search engine traffic grew 58% from July 2008 to July 2009 and has captured a whopping 67% of the entire search market.

Yahoo was a distant 2nd but only grew 2% over the same time period. Microsoft grew an impressive 41% yet still only manages to capture 3% of the available search market. However, this number should change quite a bit with the eventual merger of Yahoo and Bing search engines which will take place sometime in 2010 if all goes according to plan.

Opportunity for Small Business SEO?

Being a SEO I can't help but think about the upcoming search engine partnership between Bing and Yahoo. If they can manage to become a serious contender in the search engine marketplace then you'd better start planning and optimizing your customers for this metric shift. While other SEOs and small businesses are ignoring the smaller search engines, a savvy SEO will test some strategies and begin to understand the difference.
