Peace Officers Memorial Day

It was in 1961 when Congress requested the dedication of May 15th to honor peace officers. President Kennedy signed the bill into law exactly one year later on Oct. 1, 1962. National Police Week falls on the days before Peace Officer Memorial Day. The American flag is flown at half-staff on this day. Those in the D.C. area use the holiday to pay special respects at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Wall. The wall features the names of over 19,000 law enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty. Take some time today to thank your local law enforcement and an extra moment to remember those who have lost their lives to it.
